Gökçe Gemile: Place

We thought that ‘Gökçe Gemile,’ the traditional name given to this forested area by the locals, was nothing short of brilliant, so we decided to keep it… If you’re not familiar with Turkish, you may wonder why, so let us explain.

Gökçe has several meanings in Turkish – sky blue, celestial, heavenly – all of which sum up Gökçe Gemile perfectly: the azure, ultramarine and turquoise of the sea below, the clear blue of the sky above and the heavenly beauty, peace and quiet of the location.

Gemile, on the other hand, is the name given to this part of the coastline, which stretches from the historic site of Af Kule, once a monastic retreat, past the mysterious uninhabited wooded cape of İblis Burnu, all the way to the rocky inlets of Beş Taşı and includes the mystical island of Gemiler with its numerous churches and Byzantine ruins, which is also known hereabouts as St Nicholas island.

Whether you choose to lie by a pool, relax in a natural jacuzzi fashioned from a single massive stone, or experience a house that is unique in terms of design, setting and ambience, Gökçe Gemile embodies an extraordinary architectural masterpiece in a pristine natural setting that we consider to be among the most idyllic locations in the Mediterranean, if not the world.

If your wish is to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life to a sumptuous hideaway, where the only sights are the sea, trees and mountains and the only sounds are those of nature in all its glory, then Gökçe Gemile is the place for you.

Here at Gökçe Gemile, silence is truly golden.
